Fun Storage for Quiet Time Activities

October 3, 2012 by Rebecca Leave a Comment

Looking for some fun and practical storage containers for quiet time activities? Read on for some great finds and some new suggestions for quiet time activities too!

I’ve talked about the importance of quiet time in the past and I’m revisiting it based on personal need! I’ll admit that quiet time fell out of our daily routine this past summer. There seemed to be enough down time that we didn’t see a need for it. When Henry started pre-school again, we definitely started noticing some changes in his behaviour and have since returned quiet time to our daily routine. It wasn’t exactly accepted with open arms at first.  I would frequently find Henry perched on top of the radiator cover or lying in a heap of clothing he had pillaged from his closet.  But with a little consistency, he is totally into it now. He actually asks to go to his room after lunch and on occasion has declared that he “…isn’t finished quiet time yet”.  What are we doing right? Here’s a breakdown:

quiet time activities

A Head’s Up

We give a five minute warning before quiet time begins.

Assign Quiet Time Activities and Toys

Reserving toys and activities just for quiet time will help to keep your child engaged. It’s also important to rotate items regularly to keep things fresh and interesting. Lately we’ve been using the following:

  • Melissa and Doug magnetic body puzzle
  • Crayola window writers
  • CAT Take-A-Part Dump Truck
  • Magformers
  • Flashlight

Watch the Clock

We don’t leave him up there for hours. Right now he stays in his room for about 45 minutes.

Incorporate Clean Up Time for Quiet Time Activities

Once quiet time is over Henry is responsible for cleaning up his toys.

Rinse and Repeat

We are consistent about where and when quiet time takes place.

AND, ever since my organization frenzy from a couple of week ago, I’ve been on the look out for fun and practical storage containers to house his quiet time items. We were using a cloth bag, but I wanted to jazz things up a bit. Hint: I’ve opted for something to help remind Henry to be as “quiet as a mouse”.   Check out these great options:

Toy storage

1. Paper Suitcase | Paper Source

2. Library Caddy | Land of Nod

3. Mouse Storage Caddy | Three Sprouts

4. Plastic Bin | Crate and Barrel

5. Medicine storage box | Land of Nod
